15th Celebration of African Appreciation Day

African Appreciation Day is a free event featuring live performances, workshops, free food and vendors. This year’s entertainment includes performances by drummers, spoken word artists and a stroll off by fraternities and sororities. The event also features free lunch, as well as free attractions such as a rock wall, sling shot, caricature artist and face painting.

African Appreciation Day is a semi-annual event started in 1990 and was created by Pi Psi Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. to celebrate African heritage outside of Black History Month.

The Pi Psi Chapter was chartered on the UC Santa Cruz campus on April 30, 1989 and was the first sorority and the second Greek organization on the campus.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is a private, non-profit organization whose purpose is to provide assistance and support through established programs in local communities throughout the world. Founded in 1913, Delta Sigma Theta is a sisterhood of more than 200,000 predominately Black college educated women at more than 900 chapters in the United States, England, Japan, Germany, the Virgin Islands, Bermuda, the Bahamas and the Republic of Korea.
